Nominations for the 2024 RSPCA WA Animal Welfare Awards are now open–and the charity wants to hear about heroic and caring humans, as well as incredible furry friends.

Anyone can submit an online submission for a deserving group or individual working to save animal lives or improve animal welfare. Plus, there is one special category exclusively for animals who are making a positive difference for their owners or their community.

RSPCA WA Chair Lynne Bradshaw AM said the awards were a chance to spotlight and celebrate quiet achievers across WA.

“If you know an amazing animal welfare group, a devoted volunteer, or a brave animal rescuer, we want to hear their story,” she said.

“These people and groups don’t do it for recognition, but it’s so important we pause and acknowledge their efforts – I guarantee the animals would if they could.

“Highlighting this work also has the potential to inspire others to treat animals with kindness.”

Mrs Bradshaw said, of the five categories, the Volunteer Award had proved especially popular last year, and had unearthed many heart-warming tales.

“We heard incredible stories of the dedicated volunteers in WA last year, from RSPCA WA’s very own longest serving volunteer, to a list of animal lovers who have rescued wild birds, and amazing humans who run sanctuaries and adoption programs,” she said.

The Animal Award always attracts endearing stories about amazing animals in the community.

Last year, Jimbo the dog was recognised for his work changing lives at the Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Jimbo spends his days visiting the young people, bringing a calming energy that makes them more comfortable to open up and talk about their feelings.

You’ll also find more information about the five award categories, which are: Animal Award; Humane Award; Youth Award; Community Action Award; and Volunteer Award. Recipients will be recognised at a special ceremony on Friday 4 October for World Animal Day.

Nominations close Monday 2 September.
