RSPCA WA inspectors Peta and Candy reunited with a 2.5-year-old Mastiff named Cupcake on Wednesday morning in what was a sweet reunification of old friends.

Cupcake, who came into the RSPCA’s care after being saved by a Shire of Harvey ranger, was on the verge of euthanasia but thankfully the ranger persevered with a second vet opinion, and she was soon on her way to the Animal Care Centre in Malaga.

She presented with severe skin disease and ear infections requiring vet care but after some time under care was placed on foster with her now owner Laura Roberts.

Ms Roberts admits Cupcake was a “foster fail” but has been well-worth the time and energy that went into fixing her separation anxiety. Now she says Cupcake is “the best thing to come home to”.

RSPCA WA spokesperson Lou Rowe said Cupcake is “the embodiment of RSPCA’s work”.

“Her recovery and rehoming could not have been done without the generosity of our donors,” she said.

“It costs us around 12 million each year to care for the 2,500 animals that come through our doors – we rely on donations for around 80 per cent of that funding.

“This is why we are encouraging the community to hold a Cupcake Day event this September, so each of those animals have the same chance at a wonderful life that Cupcake did.

“Cupcake Day can be held any day this month as a morning tea or bake sale at your school or workplace.

“It is really easy to sign up as a host on the Cupcake Day website and we have even provided a plethora of resources to help you promote your Cupcake Day.

“Last year, our supporters raised $61,000 for Western Australia’s most vulnerable animals and we are certainly aiming to beat that figure this year.”
